Sorry about posting this so long after the hike. Sometimes my non-hiking life just gets in the way.
This hike took place on my birthday. It was a milestone birthday and had me feeling in need of something a bit life affirming, like a nice hike in the woods. Anyway, this was in Moreau State Park, a bit south of the Adirondack region. I have hiked here before and appreciate its closeness (about a 40 minute drive) when I need an easy 'wild' fix. Below is the trail-map board at the trail-head on the north-eastern side of the trail system. There are many trails here, enough to put together a 8 to 10 mile hike with only a little ingenuity.
I started out in the morning, even so there were several cars at the trail-head on a Sunday. I headed southwest, paying attention to the trail markers as they are color coded and I wanted to stay on the correct trails to get me to a section I had not hiked before, the trail to Lake Ann. I occasionally met someone else out for a walk. The trail does not have much elevation change (unless you descend from the ridge towards one of the nearby roads). The trail was in reasonably good shape and the weather was a bit cool so I did not overheat. It took a little less than 2 hours to reach the junction with the trail to Lake Ann.
The trail to Lake Ann, blazed in purple went fairly straight for a while. It even passed a lean-to (I did not know it was possible to camp on these trails) and a sign indicating No Trespassing (the park adjoins land formerly associated with McGregor Correctional Facility).
I kept thinking I would reach Lake Ann, and even saw indications of a clearing off to the right of the trail, but no Lake Ann. After a bit, the trail crossed a power line right-of-way and then the trail started meandering in small loops. It was then I passed another hiker on the trail. About 10 minutes later I finally reached Lake Ann. It was a nice place for lunch and I sat by the water for my meal. There was a bench, but I wanted to be closer to the water.
After sitting a bit and thinking about the milestone day, taking a few pictures, and how nice it was to be out in the woods on a nice fall day I got up to leave. Just as I was leaving, another person came out of the woods on another trail (new as it wasn't on my map) from the opposite side as I came in on. I walked back the way I came, the walk back taking about the same length of time as the walk in. I did meet 1 or 2 people on the walk out. Overall, it was a nice hike and served its purpose well.
