Spring 2018 Day-hikes
I did my first day-hike of 2018 just before Memorial Day weekend. Because I had little time I chose a close by location - Moreau Lake State Park. I started at the same location as my last Moreau Lake State park hike, up on the saddle on the eastern side of the park. There were a few people out, but it wasn't too busy.

I hiked until lunch time on various trails (yellow, red and blue) and ate lunch along the trail. I returned the way I came. It made for a nice relatively short hike without getting too far from home.
My second day-hike was on Father's Day and was even closer to home. I found the Mohawk River State Park system of trails. These are not as well marked as most hiking trails, they seem to be marked mostly for one direction of travel. But there were other people out on them, including a mountain biker. One of the few negative things about these trails is you are never far from a road so there is road noise that sometimes obscures the nature sounds. The trail crosses power line right of ways and it also intersects the Mohawk Hudson Bike trail. I reached one of these and took a side trip to Lock 7 of the Erie/Barge canal on the Mohawk River. I had Pippa with me and we watched a couple of yachts use the lock which was interesting to see.

This was a short hike that took me all over the trail system, with some left unexplored. I did not have lunch on the trail, instead I ended this hike just at lunch time and went home. Next time I will try to bring a map because it got confusing sometimes. It helped make my Fathers Day a nice one.
