One More Step
So far I have been focusing on the basic necessities. But there are other considerations that affect the hike like boots, the pack, clothing, and navigation. A relatively new consideration is communication. By that I mean the ability to send (or even receive) messages on the trail. Although you might be thinking this is referring to cell phones, I am not. Over the last few years satellite messaging has become popular for hiking and backpacking. I have the basic SPOT satellite messenger. While I would not rely on it alone to get me out of a jam, it does provide peace of mind in the ability to send the occasional 'Okay' message. Plus, it provides a record of where I have been even if I don't carry my hand held GPS unit (to save weight). But now there are available units to send more than basic pre-written messages. These units can allow customized, out in the field, messages so that if I am ahead or behind schedule I can tell my home what is going on. For that reason I am contemplating getting one before my planned trip because of the length of the hike. I think some of the units even allow messages to be received (via a bluetooth connection to a smartphone). This potential is part of the reason I treated myself to a smartphone this past Christmas. But I am uncertain on whether the investment is worthwhile due to a number of lackluster reviews I have seen for the newer units. My other concern is that I would need to take my cell phone. This is extra weight for something that does not serve its primary purpose on the trail (cell phone reception is notoriously poor on the trail) and having to protect the phone from getting wet or dropped (more weight?). Right now I have taken a wait and see approach. Basically I will continue to watch reviews and prices to decide. But I will need to act soon to support my trip.
